Researchers are investigating gender abuse and harassment in Victorian councils.

A record number of women were elected at the October 2020 Victorian council elections, with female representation now at 43.8 per cent.

However, surveys show the workplace culture is not becoming less toxic for female politicians.

About 23 per cent of female councillors compared to only 3 per cent of males report  “very often” experiencing negative behaviours that affect them personally.

More than a third of women reported receiving demeaning, rude or derogatory remarks about their gender during the election.

“The findings highlight a terrible start for many women in their roles as elected public representatives,” the researchers say.
