The Morrison Government is mailing out cheques ahead of the upcoming election.

This week’s budget announcement is expected to see four million Australians receive a cash handout from the Federal Government to help cover the cost of rising power prices.

The one-off Energy Assistance Payment - $75 for singles and $125 for couples - will go to age pensioners, people on the Disability Support Pension, veterans, carers and single parents.

Mr Frydenberg has described the payments as “responsible, targeted spending”, not a vote-buying cash-splash.

“This is money [that's] going to go into people's pockets to help meet the cost of their next power bill,” he told Channel Nine.

The $285 million plan is the far from original, given that the same scheme was included in the Coalition’s 2017 budget.
