The South Australian Government has welcomed the breaking of the political deadlock that will allow for the progression of the nationally harmonised Work Health and Safety legislation.

Premier Weatherill said negotiations have seen concluded, with Independent MP John Darley joining Dignity for Disability MLC Kelly Vincent and the Greens in supporting this previously stalled legislation.

“This progressive legislation will deliver modern and harmonised safety laws for South Australian workers and their families,” Mr Weatherill said.

“These laws will ensure South Australians have a right to a safe and healthy work environment.”

State Industrial Relations Minister, Russell Wortley, said he was delighted the legislation now enjoyed full support.

“The Government has agreed with Mr Darley on amendments to height limits, clarification on who has a duty of care, the right to silence and right of entry,” Mr Wortley said.

“We have also accepted changes to training provisions as proposed by Tammy Franks MLC of the Greens.”

“These national harmonised laws have been under development for more than two years and follow extensive public consultation. It is intended the Work Health and Safety Bill will be debated in the next sitting week of Parliament.”
