The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance has launched a short online survey to assess the general level of mental health awareness in Australian business policies, initiative and strategies.

The MHWA is a joint venture by several major business groups including the Business Council of Australia, The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC). The Alliance seeks to develop practical national resources for creating the most mentally-friendly workplaces for all employees.

Professor Allan Fels, chairperson of The NMHC, says “according to the statistics, 20% of the Australian employees are dealing with mental health issues right now. Meanwhile, lost productivity and labour participation due to mental illness is estimated to cost the Australian economy $20 billion every year.”

Mr Fels also says with 45% of Australian adults will experience mental illness at some point in their lives, ensuring a mentally healthy and safe workplace should be of paramount importance to all organisations.

“Businesses that invest in mental health are also more productive, innovative and likely to recruit and retain the best and brightest people. That’s why this project, and collaboration and support from the business community, is so important,” Fels said.

The survey is taking submissions until August 31; anyone can take part by visiting www.workplacementalhealth.com.au
