The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKA Observatory is collaborating with CSIRO who will host the SKA Observatory’s low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The SKA-Low Communications Advisor is a new role within the growing SKAO team in Australia. Working closely with the SKA-Low Communications and Engagement Manager, the Communications Advisor will help to plan, develop and implement communications strategies to promote the SKAO and SKA-Low telescope activities in Australia and internationally.

Your duties will include:

• Draw on the knowledge and expertise of the Communications Manager, and work closely with key internal and external stakeholders, to develop communications strategies that promote SKA-Low and the SKAO both in Australia and internationally.
• Create impactful, accurate and engaging multi-platform content to promote SKA-Low telescope activities, including project updates, digital content and multimedia assets.
• Contribute to, and sometimes lead, event management and outreach activities, including media and VIP visits to SKAO facilities, industry events, conferences, education programs and public events.
• Liaise with the media to identify and develop compelling stories, and manage interviews and requests for information.
• Identify emerging issues, develop issues briefs and statements, prepare spokespeople for interviews and other media engagement, and other activities as required to protect and enhance SKAO’s reputation and brand.

Salary: AU$105,806 - AU$114,500 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential 

• A relevant tertiary qualification and relevant experience in communications, such as PR, marketing, digital, media or journalism, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience creating content for digital audiences.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities with competing deadlines, showing initiative, self-motivation and flexibility.
• High-level problem solving and judgment skills, including the ability to anticipate, identify and manage risks and to develop evidenced-based appropriate solutions.

Desirable 

• Experience with video production, graphic design or other multimedia.
• Experience or interest in communicating with traditional landowners.
• An Australian “C” Class driver’s licence (or equivalent).
