An exciting opportunity is available for a dynamic individual to join the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) in a key strategic role, leading the Service’s Strategy & Support arm.

About Us

The NSW SES is an emergency and rescue service dedicated to assisting the community. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout New South Wales, comprised of approximately 9,000 volunteer members, increasing to 20,000.

About the role

The Deputy Commissioner leads and manages multi-disciplinary teams to develop and deliver strategy and manage best practice contemporary service support functions that are key to NSW SES achieving its mission. The Deputy Commissioner oversees the areas of Organisational Performance & Engagement; People & Development; Finance & Asset Management; Information & Communications Technology; and Governance. Your ability to lead and inspire teams in partnering with volunteers, key stakeholders and members of the NSW community will be critical in this role.  In summary we need:

  • an executive with a proven record for driving reform and delivering results;
  • someone who can lead, manage and build the capability of teams to develop strategy and deliver a range of contemporary service support functions;
  • a Deputy Commissioner who can promote the NSW SES with authority and credibility, often in times of pressure;
  • a dedicated member of the NSW SES with a willingness to connect with our  regions across NSW, and provide support during operational events. 

To apply for this role, you must possess extensive executive-level leadership experience and a proven record for driving reform and delivering results.  You must also have a thorough knowledge of Australasian Inter-Service Incident Management System (AIIMS) principles and processes, and/or a willingness to obtain competence within 12 months.
