The Australian Defence Force Centre for Mental Health (ADFCMH) is a growing centre of excellence within Joint Health Command which provides leadership, best practice and innovation in military mental health. The ADFCMH is located in Sydney and develops and delivers a robust program of mental health consultancy services, training and upskilling of the ADF mental health workforce, and oversees and conducts applied research in relation to clinical interventions in military mental health.

The Assistant Director Mental Health Engagement is primarily responsible for the identification and assessment of mental health prevention, early intervention and treatment program needs across the country and their successful implementation. The role is heavily focused on internal and external stakeholder engagement to inform the promotion, evaluation and improvement of Joint Health Command mental health prevention, early intervention and treatment programs across the ADF ensuring a nationally consistent approach. 

In undertaking this role you will be expected to understand and translate program and promotion needs and requirements into actions. You will be abreast of military mental health research and contribute to activities which offer strategic benefits such as participating in working groups and scientific advisory committees. You will also act in a clinical consultancy capacity. You will be expected to have generalist knowledge of mental health issues with the ability to develop specialist knowledge for the regions within your remit. It will be important for you to demonstrate that you can apply your experience to the ADF environment.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following:

  • Development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based programs across a multi-disciplinary service setting.
  • Training and supervision of mental health professionals.
  • Application of policy, governance and assurance systems to support quality outcomes.
  • Leading a team of health professionals.

The Assistant Director Mental Health Engagement works within a blended team of ADF and APS and will provide leadership to regionally based ADFCMH staff delivering mental health initiatives and programs.
