The Role
People seeking to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF) can choose from more than 150 different jobs, depending upon their qualifications, skills and career interests. Many of these roles are considered particularly complex and/or high risk, especially from a psychological point of view, including functions such as Aviation, Intelligence, Cyber Warfare, Submarine Warfare, and Special Forces. Applicants for these more complex roles are required to undergo targeted psychological assessments as part of their selection process.

This position is responsible for leading a small research team engaged in ensuring the psychological assessment tools and techniques used in selecting people for the ADF are valid, reliable and fit-for-purpose. The successful candidate will be required to consult widely with relevant subject matter experts and stakeholders to ensure the work of the Occupational Psychology Research Team continues to contribute effectively to the wider Defence/ADF strategic personnel agenda, in a complementary and efficient way.

NOTE: The current position is ongoing however we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.

About our Team
The Directorate of Occupational Psychology is responsible for developing, evaluating and maintaining the assessment tools and techniques used by Defence psychologists to ascertain the suitability or otherwise of candidates for service within the Australian Defence Force. DOP's Occupational Psychology Research Team is responsible for the development, evaluation, maintenance and documentation of psychological assessment tools/tests used in the assessment of applicants seeking to join the ADF, and/or transfer from one ADF job role to another. Working with relevant subject matter experts and occupational sponsors, this position leads a small team responsible for identifying the cognitive and non-cognitive risk factors associated with complex ADF job roles, and develop and/or identify appropriate psychological tests and/or other means of assessing those factors. This work contributes to the effective transition of civilian applicants into the ADF, improving effectiveness and efficiency by and minimising adjustment issues caused by person-job mismatch.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal applicant will have a post-graduate qualification in Psychology and/or another of the behavioural sciences, with qualifications and experience in the design, conduct and management of complex applied research projects in an occupational psychology setting. Applicants currently engaged in post-graduate study towards such a qualification will also be competitive.

The ideal applicant will have strong understanding of psychometrics, test development and test validation in a non-clinical setting; they will also be able to demonstrate sound research design, data management, data analysis and reporting skills.

Project management is a core requirement for this position, as is the ability to successfully manage a small research team. The successful applicant will also require well-developed consultation and stakeholder management skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks.
