The Role
Within the Defence Graduate and Entry Level Programs Directorate’s (the Directorate) program delivery function, an APS 6 Program Manager is accountable under limited direction to perform complex transactional, procedural, operational and administrative work within an integrated workforce. They are responsible for understanding government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements and complying with relevant legislative frameworks.

As an APS 6 Program Manager you will work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy to achieve the Directorate’s outcomes. You will exercise initiative and judgement to interpret policy and apply policies and procedures and to supervise a team, setting priorities, allocating work, and manage workflows and staff performance. You will be expected to review and develop the quality of work undertaken by others and to identify opportunities for on-the-job training within the work unit.

This position is key in supporting the Assistant Director and Director to achieve our business objectives. As Program Manager your key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Leading the team to ensure Defence standards, policies and processes are upheld by Program participants;
  • Working closely with Graduates and Entry Level Pathway participants to support them and facilitate a positive experience while on the program;
  • Anticipating and responding to stakeholders’ needs and expectations;
  • Addressing HR matters and escalating complex issues to the Assistant Director or Director for resolution;
  • Planning and facilitating events and workshops-both internally and externally to promote entry level pathways into Defence;
  • Gathering and analysing client and stakeholder feedback to support continuous improvement;
  • Developing and maintaining a range of program materials, for example manuals and handbooks; and
  • Identifying opportunities to expand program offerings and supporting your team to enhance the quality of existing programs.
