Purpose – why this role is important 

The People Consultant – NT is part of the AFL People Team and will provide on the ground and in person specialist support to the AFL Northern Territory team. This is a 12-month maximum-term role based in Darwin, Northern Territory, that is responsible for identifying, supporting, driving and implementing key people and safety initiatives across the NT.

Reporting to the People Business Partner for NT, this is an exciting and dynamic contract position that will play an important role in partnering with the NT Leadership team to identify, facilitate and embed best practice, and help to mitigate risk. The role has phenomenal opportunity to make an impact and help shape our work across the NT.

We are on the lookout for a people and safety specialist with demonstrated experience in all areas of the human resources lifecycle and work, health and safety that can hit the ground running, roll up their sleeves and make a real and immediate difference. This is a hands-on role, where no two days will be the same. 

Supporting and collaborating with the People and Safety & Risk Teams, our ideal candidate has a broad set of technical and non-technical HR, Work Health and Safety skills at an advanced level, with the ability to effectively influence. This role is a short-term project role that will be key in implementing measures and processes to ensure long term sustainability. 

Day in the life – what you will be responsible for     

  • Collaborate with the Indigenous Programs and Engagement team to assist with enacting and implementing appropriate measures to ensure best practice and legislative adherence (from induction and onboarding to risk management and safety).
  • Partner and work with the business to assess, plan and deliver a range of people and compliance initiatives and projects - leading continuous improvement and change management across the NT.
  • Review local HR and safety processes and procedures in line with relevant legislation, and design, develop and implement subsequent improvement plans focused on risk mitigation.
  • Work with leaders at all levels on best practice HR, compliance, safety and people related matters.
  • Work with the People Business Partner on executing a wide range of initiatives in line with the People Plan, including ensuring alignment with industry-specific regulations, work health and safety legislation, and employment practices.
  • Collaborate with the People Team and People Specialists to inform, execute and provide feedback on the improvement of our programs and services at the NT level.
  • Support the WH&S Manager with the implementation of workplace safety initiatives across the NT to mitigate risk and liability, including WH&S compliance - reviewing, monitoring and implementing safe working practices at a Territory level that will last long term.
  • Support in monitoring and maintaining relationships with the Territory Safety Regulator including Regulator visits.
  • Contribute to key projects within and outside of core role and support and contribute to the success of the broader team.

Must haves – what’s needed to help you be successful  

  • Significant experience in a specialist HR and safety role in medium to large organisation. 
  • A key influencer with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and ability to support and challenge as required to drive results.
  • Proven track record of identifying, implementing, managing and embedding change in short term period – able to quickly and effectively influence to eliminate risk and ensure results.
  • Solid knowledge of the industrial relations landscape including award interpretation and governance.
  • Cultural awareness and an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. 
  • Experience supporting and implementing HR and health and safety programs including safety and compliance reviews.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of Northern Territory workplace health and safety legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Strong analytical thinking, expert problem-solving skills with a high level of initiative - able to deliver innovative solutions. 
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills, including the ability to prioritise work in a fast-paced and agile environment.
  • Willingness to travel across the Northern Territory as required.
  • Comfortable functioning in an autonomous role that reports in Nationally. 
  • Able to pivot between administrative tasks and hands on projects.
