About the Program

The Caroline Jones Scholarship is set up to mark the extraordinary work of one of the ABC’s finest journalists and broadcasters. It aims to provide the opportunity for a passionate and talented Indigenous person who is aspiring to be a journalist. The successful candidate will be able to explore the art of multiplatform storytelling for ABC news and current affairs programs, bringing with them a wealth of experiences and different perspectives.

The Caroline Jones Scholarship is a 12-month cadet program which includes:

  • Workplace training with ABC News, gaining multiplatform storytelling skills.
  • Work placements with specialist News and/or regional teams.
  • Specialised mentoring and training personalised to your professional development needs.

About You

The Caroline Jones Scholarship is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates who have demonstrated enthusiasm for telling stories and exploring the various platforms for presenting them. We’re not looking for specific qualifications within the media industry, however you will need to impress us with your passion and drive to share the stories that are meaningful to you and your community.

Am I eligible to Apply

To be eligible to apply for the Caroline Jones Scholarship, you must:

  1. Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  2. Understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander people; and
  3. Have the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples

If you also have the following attributes, then we encourage you to apply:

  • An enquiring mind with a passion for News, Sport and Digital journalism
  • Ability to work well in a team and take directions
  • Engagement with issues and how they affect people and communities
  • Well-developed research and writing skills
  • Good communication and a willingness to develop your presentation skills
  • Strong interest in news and information
  • Media interest and/or experience
  • Ability to travel
