 Director of People & Culture

  • Full time, permanent role, based in beautiful Hobart, Tasmania. Competitive salary.
  • Work alongside the Executive team, leading our people advisory and payroll teams to drive employee engagement.
  • Take a people-centric approach, building on our existing employee relations and cultivating the creative elements of our organisation.
  • Guide and support leaders from a diverse range of industries developing people initiatives for people to do their best work.

Mona (the Museum of Old and New Art) is home to art, food, wine, architecture, festivals and other experiential delights. It’s an adult playground in Hobart, Tasmania. We’re a young organisation and, along with our related corporate entities, we employ dynamic and talented individuals who thrive on designing and delivering creative experiences. The organisation is in constant iteration as new spaces and service offerings are unleashed.

We are seeking an open-minded and resilient Director of People & Culture ready to apply a wealth of knowledge and experience in an ever-changing environment, and manage the exciting tensions in our creative organisation. The entities (also falling into your remit) assess themselves against an expansive set of success metrics (broader than revenue generation) so you will be skilled in adopting a co-design approach to develop ‘best fit’ HR frameworks and initiatives in all areas of the employee lifecycle, including employee relations and compliance, rewards, talent development, and organisational design.

As a member of Mona's executive leadership team, you will work closely with leaders across the business spanning strategic design and tactical operations, looking to ensure the P&C strategy aligns with business intent and culture. You will lead a team of Business Partners, and on occasion work alongside them to problem solve and offer surge capacity. This role also oversees the payroll function and works closely with the Safety and Wellbeing team in designing wellbeing interventions and collaborating on complex and higher risk situations.

Our culture is people focussed - put talented people in roles and enable them to autonomously and creatively perform - so supporting teams to work cooperatively will be another primary focus of the role.

THE GIG

This role will see you collaborating with leaders across a range of diverse industries (including museum, project delivery, hospitality, wine & beer production and entertainment), all striving to deliver a unique cultural experience.

Your main focus areas will be:

  • Provide strategic advice with leaders on people matters, including employee relations, workforce and succession planning, talent acquisition and management, organisational design, L&D, rewards and leadership development.
  • Lead annual and cyclical people activities such as performance and rem reviews, engagement and succession planning, re-designing where required to align with strategy.
  • Ensure industrial relations compliance, especially Awards - including the Hospitality and Amusement Award, and manage legal change.
  • Co-design change management and staff engagement initiatives to support periods of transition, including key communications.
  • Provide advice and support to managers, supervisors and employees to promote a culture of harmonious creativity - this includes managing role conflicts, team collaboration and functional demarcations.
  • Lead and motivate members of the People & Culture team, acting as an escalation point for complex matters and key support in design and aligning strategic initiatives.

THE YOU

You're a forward thinking leader who inspires your team to design innovative HR frameworks which align with organisational goals and culture. Your proven management experience will enable you to set aside traditional rules based HR frameworks and operate in a culture of high ambiguity, applying your knowledge in creative ways.

You will have:

  • A progressive view of HR, with experience advising at an executive level across multiple and varying industries and occupations.
  • Ability to span strategic design and operational implementation, enjoying being hands on to get things done (in the right order and with the right information).
  • Strong current knowledge and practical experience applying Australian workplace relations and anti-discrimination laws, including experience working with modern Awards.
  • Experience driving staff learning and engagement through periods of change.
  • A client-centric focus, with the ability to network and build relationships across the organisation, aligning a varied group of stakeholders.
  • The ability to mine insights from HR data to make evidence based decisions on appropriate strategy and approach
  • A resilient and flexible work style, with the ability to adapt your approach as appropriate.
  • Prior experience leading a P&C team.
