The WA Government has announced the extension of superannuation payments to public sector employees on unpaid parental leave, up to 24 weeks.

Starting July 1, 2024, the new move, part of a $46.1 million investment, aims to bridge the superannuation gap for women and enhance their economic security upon retirement.

“Women retire with significantly lower superannuation balances... because of time spent out of the workforce when they have children,” WA Premier Roger Cook says.

Treasurer Rita Saffioti highlighted the importance of superannuation as a retirement savings tool, particularly for women who often take career breaks for parental responsibilities.

The expansion will benefit a wide range of public sector workers, including teachers, nurses, and TAFE lecturers, ensuring equal superannuation rights during parental leave. 

“This is a win for working women,” Industrial Relations Minister Simone McGurk said, calling the move a step toward rectifying women's economic disadvantages.
